The committed musicians of STEEL STRINGS & BREAK BEATS resist genre and fight for inspiring music by fusing the social justice roots of Hip Hop, the DIY ethics of punk rock, and the soapbox troubadour tradition of folk music. The tour's four diverse members are activists and organizers who use their music and poetry as powerful tools that support grassroots struggles for liberation. In addition to the bands' topical, uplifting, and crowd-rocking performances, the tour offers interactive workshops for students and community members who want to get involved with movements for revolutionary change.

WORKSHOPS INCLUDE: History of Hip Hop and Social Justice, Connecting the Dots of Climate Justice, Community Organizing 101, and more! Workshop descriptions are available in our online presskit.

King County Closing Parks. [17 Aug 2009|06:03pm]

I have a question Seattle...

Due to King County's proposed budget cuts, they're talking about closing 39 neighborhood parks. One of which is North Shorewood Park, a park I'm at twice a week with my dogs at the playgroup I organize.

Any suggestions of what I can do to stop this well-used park from closing? Tying myself to a tree, laying in front of bulldozers, or buying the park are all out of the question. I'm working on writing a letter to Kurt Triplett about the issue as we speak... But I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do.

Here's a link to the article if you're interested.

Marriage Equality Contingent Planning Meeting for Seattle PRIDE 2009 [20 Apr 2009|12:11pm]

In March the Senate passed a bill that will grant gay couples all the rights of marriage without calling it marriage. Currently this bill is just out of committee and is expected to pass and have Governor Gregoire’s signature by the end of the month. This means that Washington State will have full marriage equality come June. But it is not time to exhale yet. A group calling themselves the Washington Values Alliance (WAVA) is currently working to put together an initiative that will not only overturn the ruling but also terminate all civil union/domestic partnership rights as well. They also bring with them three strong arm members of the right wing of Washington – namely WAVA President Larry Stickney, Bruce Crasswell and Stephen Pidgeon.

This means that the fight is coming here. We will have our own Prop 8 battle here in Washington State and with the way politics often happens here in this state we can expect to see a major throw down between those in solidarity to our cause and those against it. I would like to announce a Legalize Marriage Equality in Washington contingent for the 2009 Seattle PRIDE festival. Many friends of mine are in committed relationships and are looking to receive all the benefits and rights of marriage so that their partnerships are protected under the law. As tax paying citizens we should be granted these rights. As citizens of this country, we deserve equal and legal protection under the law.

I am reminding everyone of the meeting at 7:30pm at Café Vita on Capitol Hill Wednesday April 22nd. There will be a follow up meeting on the following Monday April 27th also at Café Vita at 7:30pm for those unable to attend Wendesday's meeting. I hope to see many of you there. I have many ideas for this contingent and I hope you bring your enthusiasm, creativity and dedication. For more information, please contact us:

E-mail: washingtonmarriagealliance@hushmail.org
Hotline: 206 339-3796, updated regularly with information regarding the PRIDE contingent and volunteer information.

Know any queer rural zines? x-post (if this doesn't belong/breaks rules, sorry; tell me&I'll delete) [20 Dec 2008|02:22am]

[ mood | hopeful ]

Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but my friend Jenna (a.k.a. trashcan_chica) needs some help:

"does anyone know of any queer zines about living in rural areas or going to rural areas?

any help/pointing in the right direction would be amazing. i went through the whole Queer Zine Archive and couldn't really find anything.

jenna b

p.s. i just got a wordpress site, sassyfrasscircus.com!"

Her (AIM) away message also says: "is looking for zines about/by members of radical queer ANTI-URBAN communities, so if you know of any..."

So please comment if you can help at all; thanks. :]

Seattle School Board Attempting to Close the Only Arts Focused Public School in Seattle [11 Nov 2008|11:03pm]

Seattle School Board Attempting to Close the Only Arts Focused Public School in Seattle
by Gabriel

The Seattle School Board is voting WED (11/12/08) to re-purpose the Jane Adams Building where the Summit K-12 program is located. They do not have a replacement building planned and are depending on as-yet-undecided school closures to move the program. The likely outcome is that the program will be strongly negatively impacted or closed.
The Summit K-12 program is the only public school in Seattle with a core focus on the arts. The arts are integrated into every class, and art is a key to the curriculum.
